2023 Academy Awards Oscars

The Oscars are just around the corner, and it’s time to make our final predictions for the ceremony. After a long and eventful awards season, the 2023 Academy Awards are about to air. Even after all the precursor awards like the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards and the BAFTA Awards, there are still plenty of races wide open.

So without further ado, time to take a closer look and try to nail down the winners of the 95th Academy Awards.

2023 ACADEMY AWARDS: BEST PICTURE

Nominees: Everything Everywhere All at OnceThe FabelmansThe Banshees of InisherinElvisTop Gun: MaverickTÁRAvatar: The Way of WaterAll Quiet in the Western FrontWomen TalkingTriangle of Sadness

Predicted Winner: Everything Everywhere All at Once

After it made SAG Awards history, winning four of the 5 categories and just looking at the countless wins in other awards circuits, there seems no way that the multiversal family drama won’t win the big prize at the Academy Awards.

BEST DIRECTOR

Everything Everywhere All at Once

Nominees: The Daniels – Everything Everywhere All at Once, Martin McDonagh – The Banshees of Inisherin, Todd Field – TÁR, Steven Spielberg – The Fabelmans, Ruben Ostlund – Triangle of Sadness

Predicted Winner: The Daniels – Everything Everywhere All at Once

What many people didn’t believe at the early stages of awards season, might be coming true. The Daniels already have a ton of wins under their belt and there is a good chance they will win the most prestigious award in the film industry as well.

BEST ACTOR

Elvis

Nominees: Brendan Fraser – The Whale, Austin Butler – Elvis, Colin Farrell – The Banshees of Inisherin, Bill Night – Living, Paul Mescal – Aftersun

Predicted Winner: Austin Butler – Elvis

Now, this is a very tight, but fun race. Butler won the Golden Globe and BAFTA (the latter more or less annihilated Colin Farell’s chances to win) and Brendan Fraser won Critics Choice and SAG. This could go either way, but it paid off in the past to predict the transformative biopic performance over the big comeback role.

BEST ACTRESS

Everything Everywhere All at Once

Nominees: Michelle Yeoh – Everything Everywhere All at Once, Cate Blanchett – TÁR, Ana De Armas – Blonde, Andrea Riseborough – To Leslie, Michelle Williams – The Fabelmans

Predicted Winner: Michelle Yeoh – Everything Everywhere All at Once

Another close race, even though I feel pretty good about predicting Yeoh to win. Cate Blanchett still has a good chance, but I think the momentum and narrative just changed right in time for Yeoh to secure the win at the Academy Awards.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR

Everything Everywhere All At Once

Nominees: Ke Huy Quan – Everything Everywhere All at Once, Brendan Gleeson – The Banshees of Inisherin, Barry Keoghan – The Banshees of Inisherin, Judd Hirsch – The Fabelmans, Brian Tyree Henry – Causeway

Predicted Winner: Ke Huy Quan – Everything Everywhere All at Once

This might be one of the biggest locks of the night as Quan won every award, except the BAFTA which surprisingly went to Barry Keoghan.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS

Everything Everywhere All at Once

Nominees: Angela Basset – Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Kerry Condon – The Banshees of Inisherin, Jamie Lee Curtis – Everything Everywhere All at Once, Stephanie Hsu – Everything Everywhere All at Once, Hong Chau – The Whale

Predicted Winner: Jamie Lee Curtis – Everything Everywhere All at Once

RELATED: EXTREMELY EARLY 95TH ACADEMY AWARDS BEST PICTURE PREDICTIONS

Now, this is an open race. The award could go to Basset, Condon, or Curtis and every single one of them has a lot going for them. Angela Basset has the narrative, Kerry Condon won the important BAFTA award and Jamie Lee Curtis surprisingly won the SAG Award, which was expected to be a guaranteed win for Basset. It is tough to say, but I might go with Jamie Lee Curtis as her success came at just the right time and she might just ride the wave to the Oscars. Honestly, I might change my mind a few more times before the ceremony.

BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY

Nominees: Everything Everywhere All at OnceThe Fabelmans, The Banshees of Inisherin, Triangle of Sadness, TÁR

Predicted Winner: Everything Everywhere All at Once

This might just be another safe pick, as most Best Picture winners also win Best Screenplay.

BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY

Nominees: Women TalkingTop Gun: MaverickGlass Onion, LivingAll Quiet on the Western Front

Predicted Winner: All Quiet on the Western Front

The predicted frontrunner is Women Talking, but I am going with my gut feeling here and predict the international contender to upset here.

BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY

All Quiet on the Western Front

Nominees: Empire of LightBardo: False Chronicle of a Handful of TruthsTÁRElvisAll Quiet on the Western Front

Predicted Winner: All Quiet on the Western Front

This should be another win for the war drama, with Elvis being a close second at the Academy Awards.

BEST PRODUCTION DESIGN

Babylon - movie still

Nominees: Avatar: The Way of WaterAll Quiet on the Western FrontBabylonThe Fabelmans, Elvis

Predicted Winner: Babylon

It is always a good bet to go with a film that depicts an older era of Hollywood.

BEST EDITING

Everything Everywhere All at Once

Nominees: ElvisTop Gun: MaverickThe Banshees of Inisherin, Everything Everywhere All at OnceTÁR

Predicted Winner: Everything Everywhere All at Once

After it surprisingly won pretty much every major precursor, this is another safe bet to take for the film at the Academy Awards.

BEST MAKE-UP AND HAIRSTYLING

Elvis

Nominees: The WhaleElvisThe BatmanAll Quiet on the Western FrontBlack Panther: Wakanda Forever

Predicted Winner: Elvis

It is fair to assume that if Butler wins Best Actor at the Academy Awards this year, so this award will go to Elvis as well. Now, if The Whale wins here, we might know even before the ballot is opened who wins Best Actor.

BEST ORIGINAL SCORE

Babylon - movie still

Nominees: BabylonAll Quiet on the Western FrontEverything Everywhere All at OnceThe Banshees of InisherinThe Fabelmans

Predicted Winner: Babylon

This is another very close race between Babylon and All Quiet on the Western Front and while most people changed their predictions to the latter, I just can’t imagine a world where the voters hear this score and won’t vote for it. But I might very well just go down with the ship at this year’s Academy Awards.

BEST COSTUME DESIGN

Elvis

Nominees: Black Panther: Wakanda ForeverEverything Everywhere All at Once, ElvisBabylonMrs. Harris Goes to Paris

Predicted Winner: Elvis

Even though in my heart this award should very easily go to Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, it seems unlikely as it lost the Costume Designers Guild Awards. If Everything Everywhere All at Once is having a really good day, it could also win here.

BEST SOUND

Top Gun: Maverick

Nominees: Avatar: The Way of WaterTop Gun: MaverickThe BatmanElvisAll Quiet on the Western Front

Predicted Winner: Top Gun: Maverick

This should be a pretty easy prediction for this year’s Academy Awards.

BEST VISUAL EFFECTS

Avatar: The Way Of Water

Nominees: Avatar: The Way of WaterTop Gun: MaverickThe BatmanBlack Panther: Wakanda ForeverAll Quiet on the Western Front

Predicted Winner: Avatar: The Way of Water

Another very obvious winner.

BEST ORIGINAL SONG

RRR film

Nominees: RRRTop Gun: MaverickBlack Panther: Wakanda ForeverEverything Everywhere All at OnceTell It Like a Woman

Predicted Winner: RRR

The song Naatu Naatu is also set to be performed during the ceremony, so it is only right to award the team behind it. It definitely would be my favorite to win. And with all the love for RRR in the industry it would also be a surprise if it doesn’t win.

BEST ANIMATED FEATURE

Pinocchio

Nominees: PinocchioTurning RedMarcel the Shell with Shoes OnPuss in Boots: The Last WishThe Sea Beast

Predicted Winner: Pinocchio

Another fairly easy prediction as this film has won pretty much every single award in this category.

BEST INTERNATIONAL FEATURE

All Quiet on the Western Front

Nominees: All Quiet on the Western FrontEOThe Quiet GirlArgentina, 1985Close

Predicted Winner: All Quiet on the Western Front

It is the only film in this category that is also nominated for Best Picture and also has a good shot at winning some technical categories, so this should be an easy bet.

BEST DOCUMENTARY FEATURE

Nawalny

Nominees: All the Beauty and the BloodshedNawalnyAll that BreathesFire of LoveThe Territory

Predicted Winner: Nawalny

This category was wide open for quite some time, but I feel pretty good about predicting Nawalny to win here.

BEST SHORTS

Quick disclaimer: I don’t know a lot about the short-film categories nor have I seen any of the nominees yet, so I’ll just state my predicted winners.

BEST ANIMATED SHORT

The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the HorseThe Flying SailorIce MerchantsMy Year of DicksAn Ostrich Told Me the World is Fake and I Think I Believe It

Predicted Winner: The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse

BEST LIVE-ACTION SHORT

Predicted Winner: An Irish Goodbye
