FINAL TRAILER FOR THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE DELIVERS SOME KART-RACING ACTION

The film is finally out in theaters in just under a month, so the action and marketing campaign will be ramping up. The newest trailer shows more of Luigi in captivity in Luigi’s castle, Mario and his friends facing Koopa’s army in some go-karts on Rainbow Road, and even more of Mario and Donkey Kong in action.

In all the trailers and clips released so far, there’s only been a few snippets of Chris Pratt’s voice as Mario. It appears he’s attempting to use some type of Brooklyn or New York accent as Mario. At times, it appears the material is trying to downplay Mario’s voice since he is the lead. Regardless, Pratt’s voice as Mario has been a major talking point for the film.

The go-kart Rainbow Road sequence looks like it will be one of the highlights of the film with some impressive camera work as Mario does battle with Koopa’s minions, who have some tricked-out go-karts of their own. Mario and Donkey Kong also appear to engage in some type of race or obstacle course that looks like a level straight out of the Super Mario Bros. video game franchise. It also very much appears that the film is using classic video game music as part of the film’s score if the trailer clips are any indication.

There’s also a bit of humor with Luigi being trapped and held prisoner at Bowser’s castle. He’s then taunted by a wacky cyan Luma, looking like it jumped straight out of Super Mario Galaxy. It taunts Mario with an adorable voice, “Fresh meat for the grinder!” As Luigi tries to look for a way out, the Luma replies, “There’s no escape. The only way hope is the sweet release of death,” much to the chagrin of the other prisoners. Noticeably during the prison sequence, a version of the classic “Underworld” music from the original Super Mario Bros. game is playing in the background.

The new movie arrives in theaters on April 5. It’s directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic (Teen Titans Go!) from a script by Matthew Fogel (Minions: The Rise of Gru; The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part). It features an all-star voice cast, including Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, and Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek.

Nitpicks aside, the footage so far looks promising. Hopefully, The Super Mario Bros. Movie turns out as good as advertised. Tickets for the film can also be purchased now at Fandango.com.The Super Mario Bros. Movie will be playing in both conventional theaters and IMAX.
