Gurira wrote in the caption, “Richonne spin-off. 2023. Pre-production is in full swing. We’re getting there!” Details are still slim on the upcoming show, but it should make fans happy and excited to see the two actors back together and gearing up for a new project set in The Walking Dead Universe. The photos look like they were taken at some type of stadium or sports arena. It will be interesting to see if that plays into the upcoming show.

The new Rick and Michonne series was first announced last July 2022 at Comic-Con International in San Diego. The show will star Lincoln and Gurira, who reprise their longtime roles. The Walking Dead Universe Chief Content Officer Scott M. Gimple is the lead showrunner on the upcoming series, which will debut later this year.

Additionally, Lincoln and Gurira were actively involved in the creative process in the continuation of their characters’ stories. They are also attached as executive producers for the series. Fans have been waiting to find out what happened to Rick Grimes after his disappearance in the helicopter back in the early part of Season 9. Michonne then left on a journey to him in the following season.

The Rick and Michonne series will be one of three new shows for The Walking Dead Universe starting later this year. The other new series will be The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon and The Walking Dead: Dead City. Dead City will feature the characters of Maggie and Negan heading to New York City. So, even with the original series coming to an end, it looks like there will still be more content than ever for the zombie universe than ever before.

It will be interesting to see where things pick up for Rick and Michonne for the upcoming show and how they will finally reunite with one another onscreen. Meanwhile, the first TV spinoff of the franchise, Fear the Walking Dead, is set to continue for its eighth season, which will be the last one for the drama.

In the new Rick and Michonne story, the two lovers have been kept apart by the distance of an unstoppable power and the ghosts of who they were. In the new show, they are thrown into another world built on a war against the dead and a war against the living. It looks like the new show will be about if the two can find each other in a place and situation unlike any they’ve ever known before. The official synopsis also reads, “Are they, enemies? Lovers? Victims? Victors? Without each other, are they even alive — or will they find that they, too, are the Walking Dead?

The new spinoff featuring Rick and Michonne will debut later this year. The show will start with six episodes. It does not yet have an official release date.
