Kung Fu Panda is a franchise from DreamWorks, beginning with the 2008 animated martial arts comedy of the same name. It centers on Po, a bumbling yet lovable panda who is a big fan of kung fu. He dreams of training and fighting alongside the Furious Five (Masters Tigress, Monkey, Crane, Viper, Mantis), a quintet of kung fu masters dwelling in the Jade Palace under Master Shifu’s tutelage. Po learns what it means to be the chosen one when the heroes confront a renegade student.

Kung Fu Panda - Dragon Knight Season 1

Kung Fu Panda was a critical and financial success, earning $631.7 million at the box office against a $130 million budget. It was nominated for an Oscar and a Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature/Film, though it lost both awards to Pixar’s WALL-E. Following the success of Kung Fu Panda, it spawned numerous follow-ups, spin-offs, and side projects. The sequels Kung Fu Panda 2 and 3 have continued the series’ successful streak, with the fourth film currently in production and set for release on March 8, 2024.

Kung Fu Panda: The Dragon Knight is the third animated series in the franchise, set after the third film and the second series, Kung Fu Panda: The Paws of Destiny. Po loses his title of the Dragon Warrior when he accidentally destroys a village while trying to protect an ancient elemental weapon from a pair of thieving weasels, Klaus and Veruca. With the public’s faith in him shattered, Po goes into exile on a redemption quest. Along the way, he befriends the English knight, Wandering Blade, and they seek to retrieve three other elemental weapons to prevent the weasels from taking over the world.

DreamWorks and Netflix officially announced Kung Fu Panda: The Dragon Knight in March 2022. The idea began as a road trip comedy that takes the viewers to different settings as the heroes pursue the villains. One of the storytelling goals of Kung Fu Panda: The Dragon Knight is to give a darker, more mature tone for more emotionally-driven stories while retaining everything great about the first film – action, comedy, adventure, and important life lessons.

Unlike the previous Kung Fu Panda television series (Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness and Kung Fu Panda: The Paws of Destiny), Jack Black reprises his role as Po, reclaiming the role from Mick Wingert. (Wingert still voices miscellaneous characters.) The pandemic shutdown in Hollywood played a factor in having Black return, presenting more creative freedom with the material he is given for each episode. Joining Black is James Hong, reprising his role as Po’s adoptive father Mr. Ping; Hong has consistently played his character since the first film. Like Black, Hong’s improvisation contributed a lot of creative material for the crew to work with.
