The Winter Soldier, aka Bucky Barnes, joins Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in the latest free update for Marvel’s Avengers. Crystal Dynamics announced that a new free update is available for the game, adding The Winter Soldier as a new in-game playable hero.

As part of the game’s Update 2.7, players will also have access to the four-player OMega-Level Threat mission, Cloning Lab, a new revitalized version of MODOK, and more. You can also check out the launch trailer for the latest update, featuring The Winter Soldier reveal below:

FREE UPDATE FOR MARVEL’S AVENGERS INCLUDES THE WINTER SOLDIER AS A PLAYABLE HERO

Besides the new playable hero and the new mission level, the latest free update also includes new gear and increases the maximum power level achievable in the game to 185. Also, gamers will be able to continue the game’s story through the ongoing Avengers Initiative. This now adds to the game’s several campaigns, 11 playable heroes (12 for the PlayStation consoles), and countless hours of multiplayer co-op action for up to four players.

For playing as Winter Soldier, Bucky Barnes is classed as a master assassin, brawler, and ranged specialist. He was previously captured by the Scientist Supreme Monica Rappaccini to use him as her personal assassin and leverage his Soviet-era protocols in order to harness MODOK as a more pliable weapon. However, Barnes was able to escape with the Avengers’ help. Now, he wants to bring AIM to justice and put his guilt and anger to rest over the terrible things he’s done in the past.

In the Omega-Level Threat Mission Cloning Lab, the Avengers face a familiar threat, the return of Scientist Supreme Monica Rappaccini and MODOK. The new Cloning Lab mission will require advanced tactics and the full cooperation of a four-player squad to beat the challenge that is at a Power Level of 175. Players who pass the mission will get access to some more powerful gear.

In the mission, the Avengers have to defeat MODOK before Scientist Supreme Monica Rappacini can take control of one of the world’s most powerful minds.

Crystal Dynamics also detailed Winter Soldier’s abilities in a gameplay featurette. He’s armed with Steel-Forged Tancity as his Intrinsic Ability, and his Intrinsic Overcharge is Red Star Rising. He also has a light and heavy sprinting attacks called Glinting Blade and Explosive Entrance.

Players can also utilize Bucky’s custom rifle for a Heavy Power Attack called Buck Shot. The attack can be upgraded to give players access to a fully automatic firing mode, armored-piercing rounds, and of course, a grenade launcher. He’s also armed with a room-clearing Ultimate Heroic attack called Protocol Override.

That’s detailed in the featurette below. Other newly released game videos showcase Winter Soldier’s comic origins, an animatic trailer, and the Cloning Lab Launch Trailer:

For the Winter Soldier gameplay, players will also have access to a custom mission chain and a set of unique in-game skins for the character. Marvel’s Avengers is available now on multiple platforms. Players can check out the game on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, PlayStation Plus (Extra and Premium), Xbox Game Pass, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Windows PC, and Steam.

The Avengers game was not short of problems at launch. At the very least, Crystal Dynamics continued supporting the game with free updates and content, so it does have that going for it. Now, the game at least has a fairly sizable roster compared to what it started with. The roster has almost doubled with the addition of heroes such as Black Panther, Hawkeye, Spider-Man, and now The Winter Soldier.

What do you think of the news? Are you looking forward to playing as Winter Soldier in Marvel’s Avengers? Do you think the game has improved since its launch and now added a solid roster of heroes and content? Or has the game been an overall disappointment?
