THE WOMAN KING OPENING SCENE NOW AVAILABLE TO CELEBRATE THE DIGITAL RELEASE

The Woman King performed well in theaters becoming a sleeper hit at the box office earlier this year. The film received widespread praise among critics, scoring 94% on Rotten Tomatoes. It appears to be on the cusp of getting some major award buzz and nominations for 2023, including Oscar contention.

The historical epic, which is inspired by true events, tells the story of the Agojie, an all-female unit of warriors who protected the African Kingdom of Dahomey in the 1800s with their fierce skills. In the film, General Nanisca (Oscar-winner Viola Davis) seeks to train a new generation of recruits and ready them for battle against enemies who are determined to destroy their way of life.

The film is directed by Gina Prince-Blythewood from a script by Dava Stevens and Prince-Blythewood, based on a story by Maria Bellow. The motion picture is produced by Cathy Schulman, Viola Davis, Julius Tennon, and Maria Bellow, with Peter McAleese serving as executive producer. The film also stars Thuso Mbedu, Lashana Lynch, Sheila Atim, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, and John Boyega.

The opening scene showcases the Agojie, led by General Nanisca, leading her troops into battle. The enemies of the Dahomey Kingdom, the Oyo Empire, has allied with the Mahi people to raid Dahomey villages and sell captives to European slavers. Nanisca and her troops then engage in an intense battle with an enemy group and free some captives before returning to their home.

Per Variety, Viola Davis already appears to be getting some Oscar buzz for her performance as General Nanisca, so it already looks like this film will be putting her in contention for another Academy Award. Along with Davis, with the right marketing push by Sony Pictures, Gina Prince-Blythewood could also be in contention for Best Director, and the film itself might become a candidate for Best Picture. However, that still remains to be seen. Variety’s report also noted that Lashana Lynch, who portrayed Izogie could also be up for Best Supporting Actress for the film.
