Madame Web

New set photos of Madame Web seem to have captured key moments in the character’s origin story.

In the comics, there have been multiple version of Madame Web, and new rumors have stated that the film adaptation of the character will also have its main actors play multiple versions of Spider-Man’s clairvoyant. We do know that Dakota Johnson will be playing the “main” Madame Web, but any other actor who was announced as part of the film’s cast are currently playing undisclosed characters. It was first reported that Johnson was playing Cassandra Webb, the main version of Madame Web. However, from its recent set photos featuring herself and her co-star Adam Scott, it may not be the case anymore.

In the main comics, Cassandra Webb mutant, born blind, and paralyzed. However, she has gained telepathic abilities which has allowed her to become a clairvoyant. She is diagnosed with myasthenia gravis, an autoimmune disease preventing her from walking and seeing, as she is linked to a life support system in the shape of a web. Instead of prowling the streets on her own, she guides others to do tasks for her.

Sony likes to change the origins of their characters and their powers with every SSU film they make, but Johnson might be playing Julia Carpenter instead, who was the protégé of Cassandra Webb in the comics. That change would be a huge departure from the character’s comic origins, and place in the Marvel universe, but, once again, Sony likes to change things and don’t necessarily care about comic accuracy or continuity.

Set photos of the movie from Spider-Man Brasil’s Twitter account show Johnson’s character as a paramedic, alongside Adam Scott’s undisclosed protagonist. Though one now assumes that the two of them are playing co-workers, since they are both paramedics. But Johnson does not look like Cassandra Webb in those scenes, but someone else. And since Julia Carpenter is historically known as Webb’s protégé, there’s a big reason to believe that this is who she will be playing.

After Cassandra Webb dies in the comics, Julia Carpenter, a former Spider-Woman, gains her abilities and becomes the new Madame Web. If Johnson is playing Carpenter, this could mean that Webb is already dead, or is about to die, and the movie will follow her journey as she becomes Madame Web, whilst ignoring her Spider-Woman past. I have no idea as to how exactly they will do that, but this seems like the most plausible theory.

Since a Spider-Woman film is in development, it would make no sense to make Carpenter a former Spider-Woman since the *main* character of that universe has not been introduced. And so it’s easy to believe that Carpenter will take the mantle of Madame Web at first, and become the SSU’s first clairvoyant, while potentially battling multiple versions of the character played by Sydney Sweeney and Isabela Merced. Again, this is all pure speculation, and could make for a highly interesting movie.
