Sonic The Hedgehog 3 has a new release date.

One of the recent box-office success stories is the Sonic The Hedgehog franchise. Just about a month before the pandemic hit Sonic The Hedgehog was released in theaters in February of 2020 and became a hit. The film grossed around $320 million worldwide and became even more successful on VOD during the first lockdown.

It didn’t take long until the studio behind the film, Paramount Pictures, saw the franchise’s potential and greenlit a sequel. Sonic The Hedgehog 2, which was released in theaters only a few months ago and became an even bigger success than the first. The film just crossed $400 million at the global box office, while being available to stream on Paramount+.

Even before the sequel arrived in theaters Paramount already greenlit Sonic The Hedgehog 3, however with no set release date at that time. That changed now as the studio seems to be going fast to get the threequel into theaters.

SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 3 WILL SPEED INTO THEATERS SOONER THAN LATER

Sonic The Hedgehog 3 is now set to open in theaters on December 20, 2024. The film takes the spot of Paramount’s untitled animated Smurfs musical, which has been delayed to February 14, 2025. The speedy Hedgehog will have to face off against Avatar 3.

That puts Sonic The Hedgehog 3 into a bigger release spot than the first film’s February and the second’s April release date. While the film has strong competition, a beloved family franchise could do wonders at the box office over the Holidays.

Sonic himself Ben Schwartz has celebrated the news on Twitter:

It is not yet known if director Jeff Fowler, who helmed the previous two entries, will return and if the entire cast will be back. Another big question mark is the return of Jim Carrey’s scene-stealing Doctor Robotnik, as the actor made it known during the press tour of Sonic The Hedgehog 2 that he plans to retire from acting. Carrey played the antagonist in both Sonic films.

But fans are already excited for the third entry in the franchise as the post-credits scene of Sonic The Hedgehog 2 confirmed the arrival of a fan favorite and long anticipated character, Shadow. The most exciting aspect about the film starting production will probably be to find out who is voicing the character. The fancasts go from Keanu Reeves (John Wick) to Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad).

Sonic The Hedgehog 3 isn’t the franchise’s only project currently in the works, as Paramount has also confirmed a spin-off series for Paramount+ focusing on Idris Elba’s Red Echidna Knuckles.

I am looking forward to Sonic The Hedgehog 3. While both films surely are not masterpieces, there is just something endearing about them. It’s fun to see all these characters on the big screen and Jim Carrey’s Robotnik is such an utter delight. It would truly be a shame if he doesn’t return. And with the addition of Shadow, things will for sure become exciting. Here’s hoping Sonic The Hedgehog 3 focuses less on the human characters as those side plots kind of destroyed the pacing of the sequel.
