James Gunn says that his The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is the Epilogue of the MCU’s Phase 4.
One of the biggest things to drop during this year’s San Diego Comic-Con arguably was the first trailer for the highly anticipated end of James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy. While it was only shown to the attendees of the legendary Hall H, the lucky few people are saying the trailer made them cry.
Part of Marvel’s presentation also included the reveal of the MCU’s Multiverse saga consisting of Phases 4, 5, and 6. Kevin Feige unveiled the entire slate for Phase 5, which Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 will be a part of, revealed two Avengers films for Phase 6, but also declared that Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will surprisingly end the controversial Phase 4.

But the panel didn’t include any mention of the anticipated Guardians of the Galaxy: Holiday Special which is expected to hit Disney+ this winter. The special now sits right between two Phases as the next big screen adventure: Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is set to kick off Phase 5 of the MCU.
Spend The Holidays With The Guardians Of The Galaxy
James Gunn now took to Twitter and revealed which Phase his project will be a part of.
The writer-director calls the Holiday Special the “epilogue” of the MCU’s 4th Phase.
One could wonder why Marvel didn’t reveal the special at their SDCC panel, but it is pretty obvious that they are saving it for Disney’s convention D23, where Marvel Studios is set to have a just as exciting panel.
D23 will also very likely be the place where Marvel Studios officially confirms their other “special” called Werewolf by Night. The project already finished shooting a while ago. Composer Michael Giacchino directed the mysterious project, with Gael García Bernal and Laura Donnelly starring in the leading roles.
The helmer of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise also stated in an interview with RadioTimes that the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is “the greatest thing I’ve ever done in my life.” He continued:
“It’s ridiculous, and every day we can’t believe that we’re making it. We all completely love it. It is unlike anything that anyone’s ever seen before. I can’t wait for people to see it.”
The director filmed the special during the shooting of the third Guardians of the Galaxy film. That means we should expect the main cast to show up, but it is still in the air if Gamora will make an appearance as her 2014 self has no connection to the Guardians. Gunn also stated that the special will introduce a new character to the MCU, which he is excited about.
Set photos showed a Christmassy villa in Hollywood, so it appears that the Guardians will go to earth. There also are rumors that Star-Lord will meet his idol Kevin Bacon in the Holiday Special.

I am very much looking forward to what James Gunn has in store for his Christmas adventure. We have no idea what the Holiday Special will be about, but with James Gunn being this enthusiastic about it, we can only assume how great it’s going to be. Maybe it will be a little bit more uplifting before we then have Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 making us cry in the theatre. Here’s hoping Marvel reveals the official release date and maybe even a first look at D23.
