New details have been given on the upcoming second season of Marvel’s What If…? at San Diego Comic-Con.

Marvel has unveiled details on the latest season of What If…? during San Diego Comic Con’s Marvel Animation panel. The first season, released on August 11th of last year, was met with positive reviews from critics and fans. It recently garnered three Emmy nominations, for Outstanding Animated Program and Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance for Jeffrey Wright as The Watcher, and Chadwick Boseman, with a posthumous nomination, as T’Challa/Star-Lord for its second episode. What If…? also won the Critics Choice Television Award for Best Animated Series, and Best Editorial – TV/Media at the Annie Awards.

Marvel What If...?

The success of What If…? made it inevitable for a second season to be announced. The director Bryan Andrews teased that some episodes that were planned to release for the first season did not make the cut due to COVID-19-related delays and were moved for the second season. The new season was officially announced during last year’s Disney+ Day, without any further details. Series creator A.C. Bradley confirmed on Twitter that the season is set to premiere later this year, though no specific date was given.

We also knew that the synopsis of the series would see The Watcher explore more corners of the multiverse, “. After enlisting the Guardians of the Multiverse to stop Infinity Ultron” and “to meet new heroes and explore more strange new worlds.” But Marvel fans were mostly kept in the dark on the upcoming second season until the Marvel Animation panel revealed some new and exciting details on the second of the hit Marvel show.

What If…? Season two will be released in early 2023, though no specific time frame has been given. However, early footage of the season was shown for Comic-Con attendees, with the first episode being presented in its entirety. The first episode of its second season has been confirmed to be called What If…Captain Carter Fought the Hydra Stomper?, immediately picking up after the events of the first season’s post-credit scene, where Captain Carter (Hayley Atwell) sees that Steve Rogers (Josh Keaton) is alive and well under the HYDRA Stomper. Rogers will actually be The Winter Soldier for this storyline, instead of Bucky Barnes, who will be aged as a secretary for the episode.

Other storylines of the show will include a 1602 storyline, an Odin vs. The Mandarin episode, and Tony on Sakaar, interacting with Valkyrie and Hulk, flipping the story from Thor: Ragnarok. This season’s Avengers team will be comprised of Captain Carter, Iron Man, Black Widow, Thor, Hawkeye, and The Wasp, while Bigfoot is confirmed to exist in the universe Captain Carter lives in the latest season’s first episode.

What If…? flips the script on the MCU, reimagining famous events from the films in unexpected ways. Marvel Studios’ first animated series focuses on different heroes from the MCU, featuring a voice cast that includes a host of stars who reprise their roles. The series is directed by Bryan Andrews, AC Bradley is the head writer, and Carrie Wassenaar is the producer. Jeffrey Wright voices Uatu, the all-powerful Watcher while the cast is basically a revolving roster of everyone who’s been in the MCU thus far.
