Mad Max: Fury Road

Star Chris Hemsworth recently shared that production on the highly anticipated film Furiosa has started.

When Mad Max: Fury Road hit theatres in 2015, action cinema was forever changed. By many praised as one of the best action films of all time, Fury Road was loved by critics and audiences alike and went on to become a smash hit at the box office.

The film scored 10 Oscar nominations including Best picture and Best Director and won 6 of them, while also gaining a ton of other awards. Long have fans waited to return to this dystopian world and now 7 years later the prequel of the fan favorite character Furiosa, previously played by Charlize Theron has started production.

Chris Hemsworth – also known as The God of Thunder, Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe – has shared the news via his Twitter account. He posted a picture of the clapperboard in the desert, revealing the first look at the logo and a surprising change in the crew.

Take a look at it below:

The already mentioned change in the crew regards the film’s cinematographer. Mad Max: Fury Road was shot by John Seale, who went on to gain an Oscar nomination for his work. After that he semi-retired but was supposed to return for Furiosa as reported back in 2020. He told the New York Times:

“On ‘Fury Road,’ I told George, ‘If anybody else rings, I’m retired. If you ring, we’ll have lunch.’ And seven years later, he rang.”

He kept his promise as he worked on George Miller’s, who directed the entire Mad Max franchise including a trilogy starring Mel Gibson back in the 80’s, Fury Road and Furiosa, upcoming film Three Thousand Years of Longing. The film just premiered at the Cannes film festival and garnered bold reviews. It stars: Idris Elba and Tilda Swinton and is set to bow in theatres this September.

But the cinematographer seemingly dropped out of Furiosa, as the clapperboard lists Simon Duggan as the film’s director of photography. Duggan is known for 300: Rise of an Empire, The Great Gatsby and Hacksaw Ridge.

But most of the crew members of the 2015 action masterpiece will return as Composer Tom Holkenberg also known as Junkie XL returns to score Furiosa. Costume designer Jenny Beavan, who won an Oscar for her work on Fury Road also returns. In an interview with Variety she stated that the film’s leading actress Anja Taylor-Joy (The Northman, The Queens Gambit) was hoping to also shave her head like Theron in the first film.

Beavan said: “She wants to, but George doesn’t want her to. So I don’t know whether she will or not.”

Taylor-Joy took over the role from Charlize Theron as the film will tell the origin of Furiosa and while Miller stated in an interview that he was thinking about digitally de-aging the original actress, he decided against that.

Chris Hemsworth is also part of the cast and was once rumored to play the young Immortan Joe, the villain of Fury Road, who was previously portrayed by Hugh Keays-Byrne. The veteran actor sadly passed away in December 2020. While there were many words saying Hemsworth could take on the role after his initial casting, there is no real evidence for this to actually come to fruition.

Tom Burke, who is known for playing Orson Welles in David Fincher’s Mank rounds out the cast. He took over the role from Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Aquaman, Watchmen) who had to drop out because of scheduling conflicts.

While I am really excited for the film and am sure it will be nothing short of spectacular, I still am a bid sad about the fact that Yahya Abdul-Mateen II had to drop out of the project. I really like him in everything he’s in and he would be such a cool addition to this franchise.

Furiosa was once scheduled to be released in Summer of 2023, but has been delayed. The film now drives into theatres May 22, 2024.
