Rejoice, trainers! A brand-new trailer for Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet has arrived. Since the reveal in February the Pokémon company hasn’t revealed much, but the wait is finally over. Let’s discuss what the trailer has revealed. Including all of the brand new characters!

As always, you will have to choose between three starting Pokémon. The grass-type kitten Sprigattito, the fire-croc Fuecoco, and the brave-looking water duck Quaxly. While we are on the subject of starters, there is a lot of speculation going on when it comes to their secondary types. The consensus is that these brand-new starting characters will share the same type combinations as the starters of Pokémon Legends Arceus. The difference is that the grass starter will gain the dark type, the water starter will gain the fighting type, and the fire starter will have the same typing (fire/ghost). How was this consensus reached?

Khu, a famous riddler in the community that has shared accurate information recently, teased that the starters will follow this type of combination based on a few hints and clues left behind in different images. The riddler also revealed that the box art legendaries will both be Dragon/Fighting and Dragon/Electric. The type combination of those Pokémon will serve as the theme for the story which will revolve around tradition/innovation. There are several other hints about regional forms of Tauros, Magikarp, Digglet, Quagsire, and a few others as well.

A BRAND NEW POKEMON EXPERIENCE

Today’s brand-new trailer revealed five brand new characters, two professors, and a better look at the fresh faces of this generation. Take a look:

There are a ton of interesting information in this trailer. First of all, this is basically going to be an MMORPG. Up to four players can play together in the same map, exploring the region as they please with no set path to follow. Character customization is back. We can see that all four trainers that appeared in the trailer are incredibly different from one another. A trainer by the name of Nemona is your rival/friend/guide of the region. She seems to be very enthusiastic about the battles.

She uses three brand new creatures in the trailer. Pawmi – the electric type mouse Pokémon, Smoliv – the normal/grass type olive Pokémon, and the instant fan favorite Lechonk, a normal type hog Pokémon. The two brand-new box art legendaries are Koraidon, as the Scarlet exclusive legendary, and Miraidon, the Violet exclusive legendary. Although their typing are not known, based on the looks alone, it seems like Khu’s hints about their types could very well be true.

Several older Pokémon were also spotted in this trailer, such as Pikachu, Venonat, Fletchling, Flaafy, Larvitar, Bagon, and the newer Coalossal. Another interesting addition are the smaller Pokémon center scattered across the region. In these “kiosque” type of building also contain a mart, and what it looks like to be a place for trading, although we’ve seen in the trailer that trading can happen in the Overworld (it did happen right in front of the building however…). The games will be available on November 18th of this year.

A SMALL RECAP

Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet will be the 9th generation of Pokémon. Although the name of the region is not known, there is a high probability that the name will be revealed tomorrow. The first few trailers will usually contain information about the region, it’ll show how the starters move in-game, the professor, your rival, and perhaps the new legendaries. My guess is that we will get all of that tomorrow, as well as one or two other brand-new Pokémon.

This brand-new installment will be an open-world game much like Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Pokémon Legends: Arceus. Although PLA was not a true open-world game, I believe that, much like other introduction installments such as Let’s Go, Pikachu!, PLA served as a teaser of what is to come. I also expect the new mechanics such as rideable Pokémon to make a return.

It seems like Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet will be going back to their roots. First by going back to colors as the names for each version. Many of the speculation surrounding the choices of the colors has to do with the location of this new region. It is speculated that the region is based on the Iberian Peninsula, which contains Portugal and Spain (the map of the new region is very similar to the maps of those countries put together).

What about you, trainer? Are you excited about the new trailer? Are you excited about the very first, true open-world Pokémon game? As of right now, I’m more inclined to pick Fuecoco due to its goofy looks, but also the unique typing combination that is Fire/Ghost that will allow for some interesting team-building within the game. I have a tendency to only use brand-new characters on my team, so I’m looking forward to finding out how the rest of them look.
