Star Wars Celebration is officially underway, and Lucasfilm has dropped a bombshell about a brand-new series called Skeleton Crew coming soon to Disney+

Vanity Fair published a massive piece about the state of the Star Wars franchise earlier this month, where it was revealed that Spider-Man: No Way Home director Jon Watts was developing a mystery project. The streaming series was being created under the working title “Grammar Rodeo”, and was said to be inspired by 1980s Amblin coming-of-age films.

We now have official confirmation on the show’s title, lead star, release window, and even some minor plot details for Watts’ first foray into the world of Star Wars.

STAR WARS: SKELETON CREW IS COMING SOON TO DISNEY+

Lucasfilm has announced Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, a new Disney+ series from Jon Watts, Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni, and Christopher Ford. The cast will be lead by veteran actor Jude Law, and will be streaming sometime in 2023. Watts revealed Skeleton Crew as part of the Lucasfilm Star Wars Celebration panel, saying the show will revolve around a group of 10-year-old kids who get lost in the far reaches of the galaxy and have to work to get back to their home planet.

Skeleton Crew will be taking place after the events of Return of the Jedi, and will be within the same time period of other series such as The Mandalorian and Ahsoka.

Fans were expecting to hear news about Andor, The Mandalorian, and Ahsoka at the panel, but not many were anticipating learning this much about the secret Jon Watts Star Wars series. The brief mention in the Vanity Fair article served as a primer for the larger reveal of Skeleton Crew, which is continuing to build out the Star Wars world Favreau and Filoni have created on Disney+. What’s even more surprising is that the series will be making its debut next year, meaning development is much further along than what it seemed.

A 2023 release means production will begin in the near future, so even more details about the cast and creatives behind Skeleton Crew should come out in the next few months.

Putting Skeleton Crew in the same timeframe as The Mandalorian also opens up some interesting crossover possibilities. For years, Favreau, Filoni, and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy have been teasing a massive Disney+ event tying together all of the Star Wars properties that are existing in the same space, and Skeleton Crew is the latest piece of that puzzle.

Combining the characters and plotlines of The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka, and Skeleton Crew into a crossover special could be the biggest project ever made exclusively for Disney+. While the Star Wars theatrical slate remains in limbo, building the hype for a Disney+ feature film could be the next best thing for Disney and Lucasfilm.

Even more exciting than the fact that Skeleton Crew is happening is that it’s going to star an actor the caliber of Jude Law in the lead role. Law is no stranger to fantastical worlds, appearing in the MCU with Captain Marvel, and becoming part of the Harry Potter franchise by playing a young Albus Dumbledore in the Fantastic Beasts spin-offs.

Skeleton Crew won’t be the only Disney+ exclusive Law will be part of in the near future, as he’s set to portray Captain Hook in the Peter Pan live-action adaptation Peter Pan & Wendy, which is currently in post-production. Clearly, Law isn’t afraid of being part of IP-driven projects, and Skeleton Crew will mark his debut in the galaxy far, far away.
