The teaser trailer for Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi is here and it just blew our minds.

Following the footsteps of sister shows The Mandolorian and The Book of Boba Fett, Obi-Wan Kenobi will again return to the past and fill in the gaps between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, this time from the perspective of the fan-favorite character.

Check out the trailer below:

As derided as the prequels may be, Ewan McGregor’s performance as a younger Obi-Wan Kenobi has been a consistent point of praise among longtime fans and critics. It makes perfect sense to center a television show about the beloved character and bring McGregor back to the role so fans can finally see what Obi-Wan was up to in the intervening years between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope

In the trailer, We see McGregor’s Obi-Wan Kenobi grieving over the loss of his Padawan Anakin Skywalker to the Dark Side, returning to Tatooine, and continuing to fight the forces of evil alongside the Jedi. Ian McDiarmid’s Palpatine could also feasibly make an appearance as well and, as with any Star Wars show, we have some new characters in play.

It’s a fascinating prospect for a series given that the period between Episodes 3 and 4 allows so much room for worldbuilding and expansion, and while there’s definitely a tinge of nostalgia involved in the making of this show, I believe it could bring interesting new elements to the lore while still keeping fans happy (something which has proven increasingly difficult to do). We don’t know whether or not this will tie in with the announced Ashoka series starring Rosario Dawson in the title role, but given she and Obi-Wan were friends during The Clone Wars series, it’s possible we’ll get the two onscreen together for the first time in live-action.

As great as fan service is, the most exciting thing to me about this trailer is that it hints at a greater exploration of the Jedi. Outside of books and some video games, the inner workings of The Jedi have rarely been explored on a deep level, so doing so in the Obi-Wan series could offer casual viewers something new and exciting. What are the stresses of Jedi like? Do different Jedi struggle with the morality of their actions within the star systems?

Also, while we saw plenty of Obi-Wan Kenobi in The Clone Wars show, we haven’t gotten a lot of time with him after Anakin turned to The Dark Side, so getting a chance to see his psyche could add wondrous new depths to the character.

Aside from the character and plot potential, the bits of action we get here also show that Obi-Wan will provide both the lightsaber battles and spacebound skirmishes the franchise is known for. TV budgets have rapidly ballooned to rival those of feature films, so the potential thrills we could get from the comfort of our couches should be in no short supply.

An again, we have Ewan McGregor in the lead, an actor who has remained as dedicated to this part as ever while still expanding his own range and acting career, so there’s no doubt in my mind he’ll deliver yet another great performance.

Of course, we won’t be able to dissect this any further until Obi-Wan Kenobi officially drops on May 25, 2022, but until then, this teaser promises big thrills, interesting ideas, and a return to a fan-favorite character that helped define a generation. May The Force Be With Him.
