Shazam! was a hit when it released in 2019. The film has been acclaimed by fans and critics alike, both of whom have praised it for its humor, comedic fun and willingness to make fun of villains – and of course, its pure ridiculousness.
The original was amazing, showing both sides of Billy Batson: orphan and superhero. Fans are hoping that the relationships explored can be carried over to the sequel, whether it’s the villains that return, or the Shazam(s). Good news, it looks like we may get just that.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods is one of those films that has VERY high expectations. Coming off the blockbuster original, it has extremely high expectations to live up to, and unfortunately, it’s not looking like it can live up to those expectations. However, with a cast consisting of Zachary Levi, Rachel Zegler, Grace Fulton, Asher Angel, and more, that’s not going to stop it from trying. The film is directed by David F. Sandberg, who also directed the original. It releases in June 2023, and we may have just received new info about the sequel.
Doctor Sivana Reportedly Set To Return In Shazam! Fury of the Gods
Per a new report by The Cosmic Circus, Mark Strong has filmed scenes for Shazam! Fury of the Gods, to reprise his role as Doctor Sivana in the sequel to 2019’s Shazam!. It’s unknown to the extent of his role, but The Cosmic Circus founder Lizzie Hill has said that her sources say it’s an end-credits scene appearance, laying the groundwork for another DC appearance in the near future. There was also speculation that Mr. Mind was returning for the sequel, but director David Sandberg shut that rumor down, saying that voice actor Anthony Gabriel has done voice work for the film, but not for Mr. Mind.
Mr. Mind or not, it’s great to know that Dr. Sivana will be returning to the DC universe again soon! He was a fan-favorite villain in Shazam!, and as such, fans are raving about his return. Mark Strong was a fantastic actor in the role, and I’m glad to hear that he’ll be back. Hopefully, he’ll have an expanded role in the DCEU going forward. My only concern about his appearance is how it’ll be executed. Per recent test screening leaks for Shazam 2, the film is said to be “mediocre at the best.” That’s not great news coming off the success of the original, but we have 17 months until release, so hopefully, they can fix those issues.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods is currently set for release on June 2, 2023, exclusively in theaters. Catch the original Shazam! now streaming on HBO Max for no additional cost.
