Sonic The Hedgehog 2 has released its first official trailer, teasing Knuckles, a powerful MacGuffin, and Tails the Fox.

Sonic The Hedgehog stars Ben Schwartz, James Marsden, Idris Elba, Colleen O’Shaugnessey, and Jim Carrey. Schwartz returns as Sonic, while Elba and O’Shaugnessey are new to the sequel, playing the CGI Knuckles and Miles “Tails” Prowler respectively. Carrey portrays the villainous Dr. Robotnik, or “Eggman”, and Marsden plays Tom Wachowski, a good-natured, simple sheriff and Sonic’s best friend.

Colleen O’Shaugnessey has the notable distinction of being the only Sonic cast member to have previously voiced their character in a video game. O’Shaugnessey has provided voicework for Tails since the early 2010s. Schwartz found near universal acclaim within the Sonic fandom for his performance as the blue hedgehog in Sonic The Hedgehog (2020), though some would have preferred Roger Craig Smith, who has voiced Sonic in games since 2010’s Sonic Free Riders.

SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2 OFFICIAL TRAILER UNLEASHED

Idris Elba’s arrival as Knuckles the Echidna is easily the most hotly anticipated element of Sonic The Hedgehog 2. The man behind Heimdall and Bloodsport is a powerhouse of a performer who has stolen the hearts of the nerds around the globe in recent years. Knuckles is a mainstay and has been a fan-favorite in the Sonic franchise since his debut in the 1994 videogame. The action sequences featuring the red, ruthless brawler should be a sight to behold, if the trailer is any indication.

Jim Carrey’s Dr. Robotnik was exiled into a far-away land at the end of the original film. His banishment was only temporary and – unfortunately for Sonic, Sheriff Wachoswki and the entire town of Green Hills – it somehow led him to the Master Emerald. This is a mystical artifact from the source material. It grants the user abilities hitherto undreamt of.

IS KNUCKLES FRIEND OR FOE?

Sonic The Hedgehog 2 Knuckles

Just how they will the Master Emerald will factor into the highly-anticipated sequel remains to be seen, but it’s certain to up the stakes from the previous installments road-trip story. The giant glowing green rock certainly looks ominous in the trailer. That the look and feel of the sequel is this exciting and promising is quite remarkable, considering the…humble beginnings of this film franchise.

Who could forget the nightmare inducing blue abomination unleashed on unwitting fans when the first trailer for Sonic The Hedgehog was released? The notoriously horrific CGi design was so bad that the visual team was tasked with redesigning everyone’s favorite hedgehog entirely, resulting in the more classic look we have and love now.

Jim Carrey’s Dr. Robotnik describes the Master Emerald as “the source of ultimate power”, and he seems to be controlling or employing Knuckles in order to defeat his prickly nemesis. Knuckles seems to be a foe more powerful than anything Sonic has seen thus far, as Knuckles makes clear by saying, “Do you think I need your power?” before flexing his glowing red might.

HOW WILL THE SOPHOMORE INSTALLMENT FARE AT THE BOX OFFICE?

Natasha Rothwell and Tika Sumpter make blink-and-you’ll-miss-it appearances in the trailer, celebrating something unclear. Sumpter plays Maddie Wachowski, Tom’s wife, and Rothwell plays Maddie’s disapproving older sister.

The new film is scheduled to release on April 8, 2022 exclusively in theaters. The first film made $148 million at the box office domestically and $319 million worldwide, making it one of the most successful video game adaptations Hollywood has ever seen. The second installment is poised to make a killing as well, especially considering the probable reignition of the box office following the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home
