The Illuminerdi reviews The Killing of Two Lovers, the newest independent drama by the acclaimed production company NEON.
The studio NEON is fresh off a legendary Oscar Win with Parasite last year and is building quite a reputation in the independent cinema landscape. The Killing of Two Lovers premiered at last years Sundance Film Festival and was then acquired by the studio, adding another great movie to their fantastic filmography.
The Killing of Two Lovers Official Trailer
The most outstanding part of The Killing of Two Lovers is the imagery. It uses the 4:3 aspect ratio in quite a clever way, as there are mostly two types of shots: the wide shot and the extreme close-up.
Director Robert Machoian plays with the landscape in quite a beautiful way as he is always able to capture the wide open landscape of the setting when the focus is on a group of characters, but when it comes to character driven scenes and moments he uses the actors full faces to fill up the screen. Which lets the audience inside the mind of the characters.
The story is simple, but effectively written. With a runtime of only 84 minutes, the movie wastes no time and tells it’s story as sharply as possible, through effective use of the camera, as well as with exact editing and great performances by Clayne Crawford and Sepideh Moafi.
The Killing of Two Lovers creates a captivating atmosphere, letting the audience wait until the barrel overflows and all the slowly built up tension explodes in a riveting finale. Writer and director Robert Machoian’s vision clearly shines trough. He’s able to subvert the audiences expectation, through clever metaphors and smart marketing by Neon. Machoian definitely is a director to look out for in the future.
While it doesn’t have the most complex story, The Killing of Two Lovers shines through beautiful cinematography, precise directing and a riveting atmosphere making Neon’s newest drama a movie to look out for.
