The most outstanding part of The Killing of Two Lovers is the imagery. It uses the 4:3 aspect ratio in quite a clever way, as there are mostly two types of shots: the wide shot and the extreme close-up.

Director Robert Machoian plays with the landscape in quite a beautiful way as he is always able to capture the wide open landscape of the setting when the focus is on a group of characters, but when it comes to character driven scenes and moments he uses the actors full faces to fill up the screen. Which lets the audience inside the mind of the characters.
