Despite a live-action Green Lantern series being in development at HBO Max, Warner is still moving forward with a Green Lantern Corps movie with John Stewart.
This may be confusing for some people as just a couple of days ago we got the announcement that Finn Wittrock will be playing the Guy Gardner version of the character in the series. Now we’re hearing that the more prominent, John Stewart, will be featured in the movies, according to Heroic Hollywood.
The difference between the two is the series will be an anthology focusing on Green Lanterns throughout history. The movie will be more grounded in the timeline and will just feature John Stewart and Hal Jordon in prominent roles.
The movie is also assumed to take place in the DCEU. It is unclear if the series will do the same or be set within its own separate universe.
Green Lantern Corps’ Troubled Development
A film based on the Green Lantern Corps was announced all the way back in 2014 after the critical and financial failure of Green Lantern (2011).
Since then, the film has had a rotating set of writers and even had a release date of July 24th, 2020. Unfortunately, the movie did not come out on July 24th and has been delayed indefinitely.
The John Stewart version of Green Lantern was supposed to appear in this year’s Zack Snyder’s Justice League, played by Wayne T. Carr. However, Warner asked Snyder to remove him from the film due to their plans for Green Lantern Corps. The character was then replaced with Martian Manhunter in the movie.
Now it seems like Warner is wanting to get the ball rolling on this film again. Hopefully, this means that we will finally get to see a live-action version of John Stewart within the near future!
