Gremlins are making their comeback to wreak havoc once again. The animated Gremlins prequel, Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai, has found their voice cast for the upcoming series for HBO Max.
According to an exclusive by Variety, Ming-Na Wen (Agents of Shield, Mulan), BD Wong (Mr. Robot, Jurassic World) and James Hong (Big Trouble in Little China, Blade Runner), will be joining the line-up for the television adaptation as well as Matthew Rhys (The Americans, Perry Mason) as the series’ main villain.
Gremlins: Secret of the Mogwai Story Details
Izaac Wang (Raya and The Last Dragon), will be voicing the protagonist Sam Wing. Sam’s mother, Fong Wing, will be voiced by Wen, who is described as a doctor of Chinese medicine who is said to be “resourceful, slyly funny and fiercely protective of her family.”
While his father, Hon Wing, voiced by Wong, is characterized as a “calm rock” and has “never believed his father-in-law’s tales of magic and adventure.” The elder of the Wing family also known only as the Grandpa, will be voiced by Hong. His backstory is that he claims to have knowledge of the true power and secrets of the Mogwai from his travels around the world. A.J. LoCascio will be voicing the Mogwai, Gizmo, and Sam’s friend Elle, will be voiced by Gabrielle Green.
Rhys’ character, Riley Green who will be the series’ antagonist, is described as a “power-hungry English industrialist and treasure hunter who wields black magic that is determined to stop at nothing in his pursuit of Gizmo and the mythical treasure of the Mogwai.”
The series will consist of 10 episodes that will serve as a prequel leading up to the 1984 film Gremlins and its 1990 sequel. The premise of the series is set in 1920s Shanghai to reveal the story of how 10-year-old Sam Wing, the future Chinatown shopkeeper from the 1984 live-action film, met the young Mogwai Gizmo.
Joining him is a teenage street thief named Elle, Sam and Gizmo take on a perilous journey through the Chinese countryside, encountering, and battling all sorts of colorful monsters and spirts from Chinese folklore. On their quest to return Gizmo to his family and uncover a legendary treasure, they are pursued by a power-hungry industrialist and his army of evil Gremlins.
Gremlins: Secret of the Mogwai is being produced by Amblin Television in collaboration with Warner Bros. Amination. Tze Chun serves as the writer for the series alongside Darryl Frank, Justin Falvey, and Sam Register serving as executive producers. At this time, there are no official release date announced to when the series will premiere on HBO Max. What do you think of the new animated series?
