Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is finally on the horizon, with less than a month remaining until WandaVision on Disney+ kicks everything off. That will signal the start of ten new movies and TV shows coming in 2021, and 2022 will go even bigger with as many as six new movies and six new shows coming for MCU fans.
After some scheduling changes, Marvel’s major 2022 summer release will now be Thor: Love and Thunder, which will bring back a slew of MCU regulars for the God of Thunder’s fourth solo film. The movie is gaining momentum and hype by the day, especially after Kevin Feige revealed at the Disney Investor’s Day event that former Batman star Christian Bale would officially play Gorr the God Butcher. This will be one of the most terrifying villains in the MCU, as well as the first introduction to a symbiote-based character in the franchise.
Tessa Thompson Shares Some Thor Tidbits
Aside from this reveal, fans are amped up to see two different Thors played by Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman, the always lovable Taika Waititi as Korg, Chris Pratt joining the fray as Star-Lord and Tessa Thompson suiting up as Valkyrie. Thompson’s Asgardian warrior last left off in the MCU taking rule as the King of New Asgard after Thor went off with the Guardians of the Galaxy in Avengers: Endgame , and the excitement is building for her return in Thor: Love and Thunder as part of such an expansive cast.
In a recent interview, Tessa Thompson teased what fans can expect to see out of Valkyrie in the next solo Thor movie. While she won’t be in Australia to begin filming until next month, she gave this quote on the little bit that she could say about the movie:
“I can tease that she’s definitely King of New Asgard when we find her. And as was the case in the last four, I would say that she’s a part of an adventure that involved Thor, in the sense that it’s called ‘Thor: Love and Thunder.’ And I’d say there’s some cool stuff going on. We have some new characters; we have some folks potentially from other pockets of the MCU. And then we have some folks, maybe, that we’ve seen before.“
With so much already happening in Taika Waititi’s second directorial effort in the MCU, absolutely anything is possible in terms of who could show up alongside the already reported cast. Rumors have pointed to the movie feeling like an Avengers-level outing, and Waititi’s teases have given implication that it will be something like Thor: Ragnarok on steroids, which can only mean a new level of crazy coming to the MCU.
With Chris Pratt confirmed to return as Peter Quill, the hope is that his Guardians of the Galaxy teammates will follow along for at least some of the ride, although there is no indication as to how big of a role he will play. Throw in three incredibly powerful women with Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster and Jamie Alexander’s Lady Sif alongside Valkyrie, and Thor will have a stacked team covering his tail. It’s still a mystery as to who else may show up, but considering how insanely powerful Gorr the God Butcher is in the comics, this group is going to need all the help they can get in finding a way to take him down.
Thor: Love and Thunder will begin filming in January 2021, and the movie is preparing to release in theaters on May 6, 2022.
