Our two favorite service droids in the Star Wars franchise are getting their own animated series with A Droid Story.

Lucasfilm and Disney announced on Disney Investors Day that they were developing an animated series based on fan-favorite characters C3PO and R2D2. The animated series will be produced by Lucasfilm Animation and ILM.

Lucasfilm’s President and Executive Producer Kathleen Kennedy stated that upcoming animated series will be a huge moment for Lucasfilm animation. Kennedy explained that “as we continue to develop new stories, the intersection of animation of visual effects, offers new opportunities for us to explore.”

Kennedy then teased what the story could be for A Droid Story, “This epic journey will introduce us to our new hero guided by our most iconic duo, on a secret mission only to them.. What could possibly go wrong?” Hearing this statement from Kennedy is a hint that this upcoming animated series might be something special.

C3PO and R2D2’s A Droid Story Journey

C3PO and R2D2 A Droid Story

The galaxy’s most iconic droid duo was first introduced in 1977’s first Star Wars film, A New Hope. Due to A New Hope’s success, the droid duo appeared in all of the Star Wars (with the exception of Solo: A Star Wars Story) films after that. They also appeared in multiple comics, novels, animated shows, TV shows, radio serials, and video games. They also cameoed in other film and television projects such as Family Guy, Ralph Breaks The Internet, The Simpsons, and many more.

C3PO was voiced and performed by award-winning English actor Anthony Daniels. His performance as C3PO made him a star and helped jumpstart Daniel’s successful acting career. Daniels appeared in all of the Star Wars films (again with the exception of Solo: A Star Wars Story).

R2D2 was portrayed by multiple actors and Ben Butt provided the droid’s voice and sound. The late Kenny Baker was the first actor to portray R2D2 from Episode 1 through Episode 6 and served as a consultant in Episode 7. C3PO and R2D2 will always be two of the most iconic characters in Star Wars and them coming back for a focused animated series is exciting.

A Droid Story: A New Adventure Awaits

A Droid Story Empire Strikes Back Star Wars

Star Wars: A Droid Story will air on Disney Plus. So far there has been no official release date for the upcoming animated series. There also has no official cast announcement, but we wouldn’t be surprised if Daniels reprises his role as C3PO, as he indeed voice the character in other Star Wars animated series. These animated series include The Clone Wars, Star Wars: Rebels, Lego Star Wars: Resistance, Lego Star Wars Holiday Special, and many more. All we can do is wait and hopefully we can see more of these two iconic droids in that beloved galaxy far, far away.
