A surprise announcement came out of nowhere during the Game Awards. Microsoft and The Initiative Studios announced the return of a franchise lost in the shadows. Perfect Dark is finally making a comeback and is set to be released sometime in 2021.
For the younger readers that do not know about the game, the original Perfect Dark was a first person shooter released in 2000 on the Nintendo 64 by Rare. The game was a huge success and praised for its campaign, A.I., and multiplayer. A prequel came out in 2005 titled, Perfect Dark Zero, on the Xbox 360 as a launch title for the console. There will be online multiplayer thanks to Xbox Live, as well as keeping it’s split-screen multiplayer functionality.

The last time we saw the series and its protagonist Joana Dark was in 2010. Microsoft and 4J Studios – the developers of the remasters of Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie, Star Trek: Conquest and Elder Scrolls: Oblivion on Playstation 3 – would release a remastered version of the original Perfect Dark and add online multiplayer, co-op and leaderboards.
There were rumors of a planned third game being developed by The Coalition, the developers of Gears of War 4, that surfaced on the internet back in 2018. The Initiative Studios, a team of developers formerly from Crystal Dynamics, Sony Santa Monica Studio, Square Enix, Activision, Rockstar, Naughtydog and Respawn Entertainment, ultimately confirmed that they were taking the lead of making the third installment of this beloved franchise.
Perfect Dark is dated for 2021 release window.
