After much rumors and speculations Sony has officially casted Oscar Isaac as Solid Snake for the upcoming Metal Gear Solid movie. This is huge news for Sony and fans of the Metal Gear Solid franchise, as this superstar casting officially confirms the project is good to go.
The film will be based on the Metal Gear Solid video game and assuming some elements of its other games in the franchise. The original Metal Gear Solid game was created by Hideo Kojima and was published by Konami. The film was in talks for development since 2006. Kojima originally hoped it would have been done or released by 2011 after he signed a contract with a party in Hollywood to adapt the video game adaption of Metal Gear Solid.
The film rights of Metal Gear Solid have ended up with Sony Pictures Entertainment as distributor and has been in development with the company since 2012. Many directors were in talks of helming the project, but in the end Kong Skull Island director Jordan Vogt-Roberts will be directing. Then finally in December 2019 Vogt-Roberts announced the draft of the film’s script has been complete.
Hopefully, when the film finishes production it would be as successful as other video game adaptations such as Detective Pikachu and Sonic: The Hedgehog. With the project now gaining momentum fans can hope that with Oscar Isaac’s signing the Metal Gear franchise and Solid Snake’s theatrical debut will be successful.
Oscar Isaac As Solid Snake: Who Is He?
Solid Snake is a popular video game character and one of the main protagonists in Hideo Kojima’s Metal Gear series. The character is depicted as a former Green Beret and is highly skilled special operations soldier. Snake is considered one of the greatest video game characters in history and is also important in the video game industry.
Due to his physical appearance, characteristics, and skills he is beloved and popular among the video game community. Some of Snake’s skills include espionage, high intelligence (an IQ Score of 180), multi-bilingual (can speak six languages), superb marksmanship, trained hand-to-hand combat, and most importantly stealth.
Snake’s missions in the game is often tasked in destroying nuclear armed mechas called Metal Gears. Snake’s first appearance was in the very first Metal Gear video game that was released in the MSC2 Computer in 1987. However Snake’s first mainline game Metal Gear Solid released in 1998 helped propel the character into stardom.
The first Metal Gear Solid game was released on the Playstation in 1998 and is considered one of the greatest and most important video games ever made. Mainly because it helped popularized the stealth genre in gaming and its usage of in-engine cinematic cutscenes. The game was a huge success with critics and garnered critical acclaim. It was able to sold more than seven million copies worldwide and sold around 12 million demos. Due to it’s success it was able to garner multiple sequels.
The sequels include Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns Of The Patriots, and Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain. All of these sequels mentioned e feature Snake as the main character. The game was also able to garner spin-off games for the Metal Gear franchise and other media adaptations.
Examples of these media adaptations include radio dramas, comics, novels, a non-profit fan film called Metal Gear Solid: Philanthropy (Which garnered praised, positive reviews, and was loved by Kojima), and of course an upcoming Hollywood live action adaptation. Thanks to Metal Gear Solid’s success Snake also appeared in many other non related Metal Gear related games such Boktai 2: Solar Boy Django, Ape Escape, DreamMic TV World Fighters, and the two recent successful Super Smash Bros video games (Brawl and Ultimate). Hopefully with the casting of Oscar Isaac he can successfully portray the girt and heart of Solid Snake in the big screen.
As of right there is no release date of the upcoming Metal Gear Solid movie. There also has not been an announced production date. Jordan Vogt-Roberts will be in charge of directing while Avi Arad will serve as producer. Derek Connolly will be writing the script and Peter King will serve as an executive. Franchise creator Hideo Kojima is also reported in being involved in the project.
