Scarlett Johansson is teaming with Apple TV and A24 to star in and produce Bride, an upcoming sci-fi drama, directed by Sebastian Lelio. The film is set to be a riff on the iconic Bride of Frankenstein character, who first appeared in 1935’s The Bride of Frankenstein.

According to Variety, the new film is described as follows:

“A woman created to be an ideal wife — the singular obsession of a brilliant entrepreneur. When she rejects her creator, she’s forced to flee her confined existence, confronting a world that sees her as a monster. While on the run, she finds her true identity, her surprising power and the strength to remake herself as her own creation.”

Scarlett Johansson will produce Bride with Jonathan Lia through their These Pictures production company. Lelio will also co-write the script with Orange is the New Black alums Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo (the latter is also writing the upcoming Wolfman film starring Ryan Gosling). Sebastian Lelio earned international attention for critical darlings Gloria and A Fantastic Woman (the latter won the Oscar for “Best Foreign Language Film” in 2017).

Scarlett Johansson has made a name for herself both in blockbuster franchises and offbeat indie films, so her teaming with A24 (a company specializing in creator-driven output like Midsommar and Uncut Gems) could lead to something great. Expressing her passion for the project, Johansson told The Hollywood Reporter:

“It is long overdue for Bride to step out of the shadow of her male counterpart and stand alone.  Working alongside Rebecca Angelo and Lauren Schuker Blum, Sebastián and I are extremely excited to emancipate this classic anti-heroine and reanimate her story to reflect the change we see today”.

Funnily enough, David Koepp is currently working on his own Bride of Frankenstein film at Universal, so it appears Johansson’s desire for the character to gain more attention from modern audiences will be met twofold.
