It has been a long road for the still untitled prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road, Mad Max: Furiosa, and today the cast has been officially confirmed.
It’s now being reported that the Furiosa led prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road is officially a “go” at Warner Bros. Anya Taylor-Joy (The New Mutants) will step in to play the character made iconic by Charlize Theron in that 2015 film.
We reported in August that an Avengers star, Chris Hemsworth, had been offered a leading role in the new project. That has now officially come to pass as Hemsworth, along with Yahya Abdul Mateen II have both joined the Max Max spin-off in undisclosed roles.
The New Face of Mad Max’s Furiosa
Mad Max: Fury Road was both an audience favorite and critically acclaimed. It went on to score ten Oscar nominations and six wins, while establishing a new action hero into the lexicon with Charlize Theron’s Furiosa. Taylor-Joy will be taking on the role of a young Furiosa in the upcoming movie, however that was not the first direction.
Academy Award winning director George Miller considered digitally de-aging Theron so that she could return, but ended up deciding against it. Theron stated:
“It’s a tough one to swallow. Listen, I fully respect George, if not more so in the aftermath of making Fury Road with him. He’s a master, and I wish him nothing but the best. Yeah, it’s a little heartbreaking, for sure. I really love that character [Furiosa], and I’m so grateful that I had a small part in creating her. She will forever be someone I think of and reflect on fondly. Obviously, I would love to see that story continue, and if he feels like he has to go about it this way, then I trust him in that manner.”
We don’t know anything about the plot yet, but it’s incredibly exciting that we will visit this world once again. George Miller is set to both direct, co-write, and produce the next chapter in his long-running saga.
