Batfleck Returns!! Ben Affleck will be given another opportunity to wear the Batman cape and cowl once again.
As first reported by Vanity Fair, Affleck’s Batman will be appearing in Andy Muschietti’s The Flash movie. The return of this version of the Dark Knight is bound to have fans going gaga, both positively and negatively.
The Flash promises to have Barry Allen jumping into parallel dimensions and meeting different versions of some of DC’s famed heroes. The movie is using the comic event “Flashpoint” as inspiration for the film. The event saw Allen time travel and change his own tragic history, which led to unexpected ripple effects throughout the DC universe.
The Muschietti’s On Ben Affleck’s Return As Batman
The movie will be directed by Andy Muschietti who most recently directed the IT series. Here is what Muschietti had to say about The Flash and the connection to Ben Affleck’s Batman:
His Batman has a dichotomy that is very strong which is his masculinity—because of the way he looks, and the imposing figure that he has, and his jawline —but he’s also very vulnerable,” Muschietti said in an interview. “He knows how to deliver from the inside out, that vulnerability. He just needs a story that allows him to bring that contrast, that balance.”
It looks like the idea of Batfleck returning was enthusiastically approved by the director for his defined features under the cowl. As well as his physically imposing presence as Batman. Here is more from Muschietti:
“He’s a very substantial part of the emotional impact of the movie. The interaction and relationship between Barry and Affleck’s Wayne will bring an emotional level that we haven’t seen before,” the director added. “It’s Barry’s movie, it’s Barry’s story, but their characters are more related than we think. They both lost their mothers to murder, and that’s one of the emotional vessels of the movie. That’s where the Affleck Batman kicks in.”
It seems the movie will touch on the emotional connection between Wayne and Allen, with both losing their mothers and ultimately finding ways to honor them. The chemistry the two displayed in Justice League seems to be a reason why Affleck’s version is appearing. Perhaps Affleck will also serve to center Barry when dealing with other Batmen he may run into, such as Michael Keaton’s Batman. As Keaton has been confirmed to be returning to the role in The Flash also.
With the idea of the multiverse in the DC Movies, they can work to distinguish themselves from the competition. By making their own standalone movies, while sharing the same world of characters. The multiverse event has been a big feather in DC’s cap so far on the television side, thanks to the “Crisis On Infinite Earths” event that aired on The CW network. The five-part story included the entire Arrowverse and audiences watched the world of DC characters interact including the casts of The Flash, Arrow, Supergirl, and more. The event also featured a surprise cameo from Ezra Miller meeting the TV version of The Flash played by Grant Gustin.
Affleck was set to have a standalone movie following Justice League, but had to turn it down due to personal issues. Many things were changing for the actor/director as his marriage to Daredevil co-star Jennifer Garner was ending. It looks like Affleck is in a better position for this return, at least according to producer of The Flash movie, Barbara Muschietti. Here is what she had to say about Affleck and his return to the role:
“We are all human and go through great times in our lives and terrible times in our lives. Right now he’s in a place where he can actually enjoy being Batman. Plus, he doesn’t have to carry the entire movie. It’s a pivotal role, but at the same time it’s a fun part,”
Muschietti seems to have total confidence in Ben Affleck and is excited to see him return and knows that fans will enjoy him once again in the part. With DC Fandome happening Saturday, perhaps we will see Ben Affleck make the announcement himself? What do you think of this reveal?
