Though fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe may have been understandably upset that the release date of The Eternals has been pushed back from November of this year, to February of 2021, due to the coronavirus crisis. It appears that Marvel Studios and director Chloe Zhao are taking advantage of this short delay to perfect the film before it arrives in theaters, a process which will seemingly include some reshoots.
Reshoots are nothing to be worried about, despite the negative connotations the word has acquired in recent years. In the case of The Eternals, they could be required for any number of reasons, from fixing plot points in the script to simply getting a better camera angle for a particular shot. We don’t yet know how extensive the additional photography on the film will be, only that The Eternals‘ star Salma Hayek is one of the cast who will be expected to return for additional shooting.

Hayek took to her Instagram to post a before-and-after picture of her getting ready, with the caption: “In anticipation for reshoots, I finally had to do my roots”. Hayek is set to play the Eternals’ leader, Ajak, whose final look in the film has not yet been revealed either through promotional material or set photos.
We don’t know for sure how long these reshoots will last, either. Hopefully Marvel has time to make sure the film is ready for its February spot. Otherwise we may see more rearrangements on the Hollywood release date calendar in the near future.
It’s also unclear if these reshoots will prevent Marvel from being able to show an The Eternals teaser trailer over the summer. Many in the fandom were hoping that the first official footage would be debuted at San Diego Comic Con At Home next month, but this new development could indicate that we have a little while longer to wait.
