Kate Kane Will Reportedly Be Replaced By A New Character in Batwoman Season 2

Batwoman Season 2 will not have a new Kate Kane, according to a recent report from Decider, but rather a new protagonist altogether. Can it work?

Fans were shocked when the news initially broke that Batwoman series star Ruby Rose would not be returning for Season 2. It was originally believed that the character of Kate Kane would just be recast and the series would move on with a new actress, but it seems this is no longer be the case according to a report from Decider.

A leaked casting call has been revealed to be looking to cast an all new character known as Ryan Wilder to replace the role of Kate Kane. The character description is as follows:

RYAN WILDER – “Female, Mid-late 20s, any ethnicity. Ryan Wilder is about to become Batwoman. She’s likable, messy, a little goofy, and untamed. She’s also nothing like Kate Kane, the woman who wore the batsuit before her. With no one in her life to keep her on track, Ryan spent years as a drug runner, dodging the GCPD and masking her pain with bad habits. Today reformed and sober, Ryan lives in her van with her plant. A girl who would steal milk for an ally cat and also could kill you with her bare hands, Ryan is the most dangerous type of fighter: highly skilled and wildly undisciplined. An out lesbian. Athletic. Raw. Passionate. Fallible. And very much not your stereotypical All-American Superhero. AEP SERIES REGULAR. PERFORMERS WHO IDENTIFY AS LGBTQ ARE ENCOURAGED TO SUBMIT.

This is an especially interesting development, and it is difficult to imagine how the showrunners will follow through on it. Not only does the recent development of Tommy wearing Bruce’s face hinge on how Kate would react to that news, but almost every character from the series villain Alice to the patriarch Jacob – not to mention Kate’s partner Luke, love interest Sophie, and stepsister Mary – have arcs intrinsically tied to Kate’s identity.

The fact that Kate is just going to straight-up disappear will certainly feel jarring to fans watching the series. We will have to wait and see how Kate’s family and friends interact with this new Batwoman.

While it is clear that is not the exact direction that The CW with the upcoming Batwoman Season 2, it would be interesting to see an alternate version of the character. If The CW is just making new Batwoman characters, maybe they can at least give the fans something familiar to the comics and the original show by making someone like Beth another version of Batwoman.

Of course, Bette Kane and Beth Kane aren’t the same character, but I still think that would make more sense as opposed to making an all-new character. It could also make for an epic redemption arc for the character. Of course, there still is the opportunity that she could show up as Flamebird which would be more faithful to her comic counterpart.

Batwoman Season 2 is set to premiere on The CW in early 2021.
