Its official, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will be speeding into theaters.

Sonic The Hedgehog surprised movie goers when it won the top box office spot two weekends in a row. Sonic grossed over $58 million domestically in its opening weekend and made over $146 million domestically and more than $306.76 million worldwide while in theaters.

Sonic managed to beat out Detective Pikachu for the biggest opening weekend for a video game adaptation in the United States and became the highest grossing video game based film in U.S. box office history, again surpassing Detective Pikachu. However, it’s theatrical run was cut short when theaters were closed in the US in March and it moved to VOD.

There have been open talks of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, which was unsurprising, given the success of the film and fans can now celebrate as it has officially been confirmed not only by Variety, but Jeff Fowler himself. Fowler directed the first Sonic film and will be returning for the sequel. Screenwriters Pat Casey and Josh Miller will also be returning to write the untitled Sonic the Hedgehog 2, so it looks like the band is back together.

Given the troubles that Sonic the Hedgehog faced following the first trailers, this has been an impressive triumph. Initially fans were furious with the CGI hedgehog’s design and Paramount listened, delaying the film in order to change the look of the blue hedgehog. The delay obviously paid off as the success it has experienced likely wouldn’t have occurred otherwise.

Variety reports “The movie is still in the development stage so decisions have not been made yet regarding casting or a production start date.”

The Sonic The Hedgehog 2 Wishlist

Sonic The Hedgehog was an origin story for the blue hedgehog, although we didn’t see much of his home, it focused on how he ended up on Earth and managed to make friends and save his new home. The famous villain Dr. Robotnik was introduced, played by Jim Carrey, and driven mad by the blue speedster over the course of the film until he ended up on another planet. It’s hard to imagine Carrey won’t be returning, so it should be interesting to see how he manages to continue his vendetta against Sonic.

Fans are hoping that more elements of the video game will be included in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, after the first didn’t feature a huge amount. This was understandable given that the film was marketed not only to fans of the Sega video game, but also to kids who probably weren’t as familiar with the game. The Sonic the Hedgehog does end with an appearance by Tails though, which hints at more elements being included.

While there is no news about Sonic the Hedgehog 2 casting it’s hard to imagine Ben Schwartz won’t be reprising his role as the voice of titular character Sonic or that Jim Carrey won’t return as the evil genius Dr. Robotnik. Colleen Villard, who has voiced Tails in the game series since 2014, reprised her role for the mid credits scene. Assuming Tails shows up again it will be interesting to see if Villard continues to voice the character.

Sonic stars Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic, Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik, James Marsden as Sonic’s best friend Tom Wachowski or as Sonic knows him “Doughnut Lord,” and Tika Sumpter as Maddie Wachowski. It should be exciting to see who returns and where Sonic’s story leads to next. Will audiences find out why Tails is searching for Sonic? It will be a while before these questions are answered, but it’s nice to know that more of Sonic’s story is going to be told.
