When Boom Studios released “the Shattered Grid” storyline in its Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and Go-Go Power Rangers comics, fans were blown away by the introduction of Lord Drakkon. A version of Tommy Oliver who fully embraced the path of evil and set out to take over all the dimensions and become the most powerful Ranger bar none. Now Boom! Studios has dropped another bombshell with the pending release of Power Rangers: Drakkon New Dawn.
This will be a three-part limited miniseries that will star other fan favorite comic character Ranger Slayer, who returns to her world in search of answers and eradicating the hold Drakkon has left on her world. This will not be the only release to star Ranger Slayer, as she also has an upcoming miniseries of her own that will hopefully be released soon, pending updates surrounding the Covid-19 pandemic.
This is great news for fans because these two series not only will give us new adventures with the characters. But it will also give an deep inside look into what made this version of Kimberly, the Mighty Morphin pink Ranger become the woman that she is.
The plot details that have been released so far, focuses on the Ranger Slayer returning to her home world to find a way to disable Drakkon’s leftover destruction. She will start her journey by attempting to take down Deadlock, a prison that houses those who stood up to Drakkon and rebelled against him. The prison will also play a role in holding details about Drakkon’s last plan and will set those plans in motion.
Drakkon New Dawn will be written by comic author Anthony Burch, who has written other comics such as Big Trouble in Little China: Old Man Jack and the popular video game Borderlands 2. It will be drawn by Simone Ragazzoni.
Burch had this to say about the opportunity to write this new story:
“I’m extremely excited to spend time in the Power Rangers universe, especially in the Coinless timeline of Lord Drakkon! I hope fans are excited about this slightly darker, more apocalyptic tale starring some of our favorite new characters…and maybe a few returning old ones.”
It looks like Burch shares the love and excitement of stepping into the Power Ranger’s universe, as other writers and illustrators have done. He is primed to explore the World of the Coinless, where Drakkon and Ranger Slayer come from. As well as showing more of what happened to the Rangers after their world was turned upside down. He will have a large number of invested readers who have wanted to see more of this world for some time now.
It looks like Boom will have the Ranger Slayer comic be the prelude to Drakkon New Dawn and will include details that will follow over to the next comic. This move is a good one, as it tells a single story over two series and highlights the strong symmetry between them. Also speaking on the new event is Senior Editor of Boom Studios, Dafna Pleban, who had this to say about the role of Ranger Slayer in this arc:
“Kimberly must return home to face the fallout from her Ranger Slayer days but even she couldn’t have been prepared for the consequences of digging into Drakkon’s darkest secrets…In DRAKKON NEW DAWN, Anthony and Simone place our heroine in a situation where she’ll have to face enemies new and old, as well as a heartbreaking choice when confronted with the unthinkable!”
It looks Pleban hit the nail on the head with Kimberly’s struggle of returning to a home that is no longer her own and to people who may see her as a villain, as bad as Drakkon himself. There’s nothing better than reading the layers of a character’s psyche and delving back into situations, events, and experiences that often have left a dark mark or a cracked outlook on someone. Ultimately being rewarding for the reader of this tale when these characters find some redemption, by creating a path of internal peace that once may have been impossible to find.
