May 27 is bringing with it the season premiere of Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD, as the show enjoys its seventh and final season in the summer of 2020. And apparently, it’s also bringing Patton Oswalt.

In the last adventure, Clark Gregg’s Life-Model Decoy version of Phil Coulson and his ragtag band of superheroes and super agents are stuck in the 1930’s and now have to navigate their way throughout human history to save the world one last time.

The final 13 episodes are set to bring back not only the series regulars for one last run, but also a number of recurring guest stars that have all had important roles working with the top secret organization. Today brings news of one more fan-favorite returning for Season 7 – one that has not been on the show in a few years.

Patton Oswalt At It Again

Not only has Oswalt portrayed one of the most important but secretive figures in the present-day SHIELD, the actor also holds the unofficial show record for the most characters played in the series. According to a report from CBR, comedy and TV veteran Patton Oswalt will be making a triumphant return to Agents of SHIELD in a currently undisclosed and presumably new role.

Oswalt has had quite the run throughout Marvel’s first network TV show, despite only appearing in a total of eight episodes. He has single-handedly made the Koenig name a favorite among fans of the show by playing the brotherly quartet of Eric, Billy, Sam, and Thurston Koenig all by himself.

His appearances all came earlier on in the series, with his last occurring in the middle of season 4 in 2017. Now that the team has escaped via time travel to the 1930’s, before any of the four Koenig brothers were even born, the question arises as to exactly who Oswalt will be playing in season 7.

Life-Model Decoys are potentially in play, which wouldn’t make for too crazy of revelation to find out one or more of the Koenigs has been around for most of the 20th century. There is also the chance that Oswalt will play an older Koenig, such as his first characters’ father or grandfather, which would make so much sense if the family has been involved with SHIELD since its earliest days.

Season 7 of Agents of SHIELD is set to bring back Clark Gregg, Ming-Na Wen, Chloe Bennet, Iain De Caestecker, Elizabeth Henstridge, Henry Simmons, Natalia Cordova-Buckley, and Jeff Ward. The season premiere is set for May 27, 2020.
