Happy Star Wars Day everyone! To celebrate, Starwars.com has confirmed that MCU alum, Taika Waititi, will be directing a new Star Wars movie!
Waititi is being joined on the screenplay by In demand writer Krysty Wilson-Cairns (Last Night in Soho), who most recently received a BAFTA Award and an Academy Award nomination for her work on 1917.
Taika Waititi is no stranger to the Star Wars franchise, as he has directed an episode, “Chapter 8: Redemption,” of The Mandalorian on Disney+. He also played IG-11 in a few episodes of the first season as well.
The idea of Waititi directing a Star Wars film has been talked about amongst Star Wars fans for a while, so it’s nice to see that Lucasfilm seems to be listening on this one.
When Will Taika Waititi’s Star Wars Movie Come Out?
Of course, probably the biggest question coming out of this will be, “When will Taika Waititi’s Star Wars movie be coming out?” Well, I may have an answer to that question.
Both fortunately and unfortunately, Waititi still has to finish his upcoming film Thor: Love and Thunder before he can start to work on his new Star Wars film.
This is, of course, fortunate because that means that we are getting another great Thor film from the director. This is unfortunate however, because that means that Taika Waititi’s Star Wars movie won’t come out until after 2022, at the very earliest. As Thor: Love and Thunder doesn’t come to theaters until February 11, 2022, after being delayed due to shifts caused by the current COVID-19 pandemic.
While it’s clear we won’t get this movie for quite a while, the thought of a Star Wars movie directed by Taika Waititi definitely is a reason for excitement and I cannot wait to see how this pans out. Hopefully without any behind the scenes drama this time. Please, just, please.
