After last SDCC, it was official: The Thor Trilogy was getting a 4th entry. That makes it the only franchise in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to ever achieve this, aside from the Avengers movies.
A big factor in this decision probably was the recent Oscar winner Taika Waititi. He was the one who gave the Asgardian franchise a new look and a new style, carrying it to new levels of success. Thor: Ragnarok garnered over 800 million dollars at the box office, making it the biggest entry in the trilogy.
And now Variety had stated that sources told them screenwriter Jennifer Kaytin Robinson will join Taika Waititi in writing the script for Thor: Love and Thunder. Jennifer Kaytin Robinson is an up-and-coming screenwriter from Miami, Florida, who is currently best known for the 2019 Netflix film Someone Great, which starred Gina Rodriguez, Rosario Dawson and Lakeith Stanfield.
She wrote and directed that movie, which got produced by Paul Feig (Last Christmas). The movie received a “certified fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with a critics score of 82% and an audience score of 65%. While there isn’t an official confirmation by Disney or Marvel Studios yet, it’s very unlikely that this news is false.
Everything’s Coming Up Thor
Thor: Love and Thunder got announced at SDCC 2019, with the first details being that Natalie Portman will return as Lady Thor. Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) will also return, and she will be “looking for her Queen”, which indicates that Valkyrie is the first LGBTQ+ character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Christian Bale is also going to join the cast, as he is going to play an intergalactic villain. Chris Hemsworth is of course also going to return as Thor, and Taika Waititi is going to return in a directorial and screenwriting capacity, as well in person playing Korg. Love and Thunder will be released November 5, 2021 and filming is expected to begin August 2020.
